Hello, I'm Eric!

My name is Eric J. Miller II and I’m the Founder and CEO of FREEDOM STAR GARDENS. I'm also the eldest of three, the grandson of American Sharecroppers, and a descendant of Emancipated Freedmen. My grandparents were participants in the great migration from the south (North & South Carolina) and brought all of their knowledge of working the land with them to the northern states of NY and NJ. Now anchored in south Jersey (Willingboro), I’m channeling this agricultural mastery passed down to me by my parents, their parents, their parents parents, etc! 

Although I was always surrounded by plant-loving, green-thumb parents, my personal gardening journey didn't begin until the pandemic of 2020. In search of a new "lock-down hobby," while yearning for FREEDOM to my own, homegrown, organic, non-GMO food, I put my engineering expertise to the test and designed and built my backyards first raised garden bed to fit my specific needs. Utilizing the ancient method of Hügelkultur, I started with growing the basics: lettuce, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, and broccoli. Seeing how my food consumption couldn't keep up with how fast these crops were growing, I knew my God-gifted abilities in gardening and woodworking had to be shared with those within my community. Now, I custom design and build raised garden beds, planters, trellises, and any other piece of wooden, garden equipment you can think of! I do this in hopes of assisting others in finding FREEDOM through the power of their own personal garden.
